779 My 28, 2011 East Infection Tacarigua Maracas Gal

Line Break - On-On Feet

What a small group turned up for the Tacarigua hash! Though ‘Tacarigua’ doesn’t sound particularly exciting, I discovered that the real reason for the low turnout was a football match. Manchester United versus Barcelona. Sure enough, just before the start of the hash, about ten male hashers were roaring approval from a house opposite the Dinsley Park where we were gathered. What was the score? I wasn’t too sure.

Eventually they poured out of the house, and the run began. Man, the start was hard-core urban. The day was seriously hot and we walked for a good fifteen minutes through the Dinsley suburbs, twisting and turning through the hot streets. We eventually passed a Sports Bar where there was more male roaring, though this time the chant was “Barca! Barca!” Everyone was guessing the score but no one could really know. As we climbed the hill past Hutt Shutts (what a stupid name), and started back down, we finally started to leave suburban Tacarigua and venture into the foothills of the Northern Range.

The grass eventually morphed into trees and we arrived in one area where there were numerous mango, cherry and even sapodilla trees. After Doon pointed out the cherries, people started grabbing branches to pick. Yum, quick shot of Vitamin C! A short distance from there, we came across a strange symbol that the hares said indicated a ‘treasure’. David Morand peeked down in the cool depths of a canal because we were certain that it must be a case of beers, but it was Nevie who found a tiny case on a nylon string that was hanging from a nearby tree. The treasure ended up being pretty fabulous though. Beer chits!

It was mostly uphill from there and when we reached the summit of the hill and looked down, the view was breathtaking! East Trinidad lay below us: the rooftops, the vast green expanse of Orange Grove and, wait. . .on the right, flying high above everything else, was Jack Warner’s T&T flag. Wow, he made the flag that big for a reason. You cyar miss its red, waving glory.

By the time some of us were cresting a second hill, we looked to our right and there were some other hashers now descending the first! We later learned that they had stopped to climb a tower to take in the view. Talk about converting the hash into an excursion! Anyway, everyone was still so hot that there wasn’t much running going on. Finally there was relief when we entered some real forest. There, it was dim, dark green and wonderfully cool. We made our way across and along a tiny stream and had to ask, where was the mighty Caura River?! It was so hot! You couldn’t do more than dirty your shoes in that muddy stream.

Just when we had resigned ourselves to missing the Caura entirely, it appeared below us, bubbling noisily. Some sank thankfully into the clean, shallow water, but the hares urged us on, saying there was a better pool ahead. So we splashed on through the river and found several places to really dip down and enjoy the cool water. After leaving the Caura, the forest ended soon after and then it was a short trek through the suburban jungle back to our cars.

In keeping with Indian Arrival Day, the ‘down-down’ had dancing ladies in Indian wear, Ash smartly dressed in a kurta and free curry! There were maybe three virgins, and only one was older than 12. A special FFF award was given to Sheldon but since it was supposed to represent the fastest person on the hash, a lot of us agreed that Doon, aka the Flying Indian, should have definitely won. It seems that Mumtaz and Martin mistook “Noooooo” for agreeable noise. Next time, we’ll have to zip it so the right man can win. The hares hilariously won the Poofter for sporting t-shirts that said the date of their hash was 28th June. Not too sure how they shared the smelly jersey but each had to drink beer from a PVC pipe armband. Only Victor was skillful enough to gulp down most of it instead of pouring it all over himself!

TAZ’s Twists & Turns

Tacarigua is a town in the East-West Corridor of Trinidad and Tobago, located east of Tunapuna and north of Trincity. It is on the banks of the Tacarigua River. It is located between Tunapuna and Arouca and is governed by the Tunapuna-Piarco Regional Corporation.

Tacarigua was originally a Spanish encomienda, prior to the relocation of the Amerindians to Arima in 1789. Some of the first Mosques were built at Tacarigua in 1850. It was Indian Arrival Weekend and our Hash Master Mahashma was looking for enlightenment in our sister aisle Tobago so the Hares ensured we found our own enlightenment by setting a Ball Buster Run which was over 2 hours and our FFF hashers (Fit… Fast…Furious) kept on going to the end. It was a good run.…nice terrain ….down downs included an Indian Dance by some of our female Hashers and the bar lime at Lance Bar was even better with Tassa drumming and DDBH (drunk dancing by Hashers)….Lets Celebrate Life…On On

The only virgins were Gillian and Zarad but incredibly some regular Hashers displayed their new shoes on the Hash ……….. Eggy, Martin and Harper.

Out of all the nominations for the Poofter Award it was unanimous decision that the Hares should be bestowed this prestigious award as they got the date of the run printed incorrectly on their t-shirts.

Now a new award was introduced: 3 F’s (Fit, Fast & Furious) Award: So many nominations: Harper, Doon (the Flying Indian), Blunden, Harty, Sheldon (feet like Shaka), David Morand, and Ash (the Handsome Stud). The award was bestowed upon Sheldon.

Hash Lingo

Virgins take note of the meaning of these signs!!!

  1. While on the trail CALL “ON ON” when you see bits of shredded paper/flour! It helps those behind/possibly lost hashers.
  2. “O” – check for the correct trail!
  3. “X” – you’re on the wrong trail! Go back to the check point and start again.
  4. “ON PASS” – to pass someone on the trail.
  5. “ON BACK” – on the wrong trail, you may have reached an “X“….turn back to the check point “O“.
  6. “On OFF” – you’re off the correct trail.
  7. When you are almost in you would see: “ON IN” pointing to the correct direction.
  8. For those who can’t keep up with the ‘3F’s’ (FIT, FAST AND FURIOUS) pack then just go with the ‘Backpackers’  (SMART) pack who just let them do all the work.>
