819 Oct 13, 2012 The Butts Moka motion in the ocean

Line Break - On-On Feet

So, having not been to many hashes, I had no idea what to expect out of the Moka trail. So, I pulled up to the meeting point (Villa Maria) with absolutely no expectations, and saw quite a good turnout. I also thought, how convenient: a drinking club opposite a “by-the-hour” hotel.

When the hares called for attention, they explained that we’ll be going through Paramin, I thought, I better hope there’s some Parang along the way, and wait nuh, Paramin ? Where am I again ? As I was trying to get my bearings, the hares then pulled out two pictures of snakes to look out for, and explained which ones cause what kind of pain. There was also the warning not to step onto people’s gardens. So, from that point intrepidation started to set in as I had a vision of a man flailing a cutlass, and coming in my direction to either chop a snake, or me for stepping on his crops.

The run started out on the road, and then all of a sudden people ended up in the river. I dutifully followed, all the while not seeing any paper and getting my shoes soaked in the river. As we came out and started heading back almost to where we came from, I could hear people’s shoes squishing, and cussing for taking the chain-up to go in the river. For the rest of the run, I could hear people’s shoes squishing, or maybe it was them steupsing. I couldn’t tell.

The trail went up and up some steep roads, then we had to climb, close to some rebar sticking out. This turned out to a road, and so it went between road and dirt. With some steep, steep hill climbs. Young and old were panting away, but seemed to work in keeping people bunched together. We eventually came out to someone’s pig pen, and we went behind and started going up into Paramin. I assumed it was Paramin, because from here on, there were all types of seasonings planted, and I immediately thought of Paul Keens-Douglas talking about the seasonings that go into Royal Castle.

At some points the view of the hills and valleys were spectacular especially as the sun had begun to set. But, I only paused briefly, and pressedon. At a certain point I knew we were on the way down and out as the trail started to descend, and I could hear Parang. Conveniently, there was a beer stop right there, which allowed me to cool down, and press on.

During the down-downs, three or four female hash virgins were brought by Josh, who was in the spotlight until another Hash virgin announced she was Colombian.

I couldn’t really make out anything that anyone said after that, since anyone else trying to introduce themselves was met with, “Nah, we eh carebout you, go back to the Colombian !”

The Moka hash turned out to be a memorable experience, before, during, and after the run, and luckily no cutlass-wielding madmen coming after me or snake.

From the Office of the Iron Lady

“Why is it that, as we grow older, we are so reluctant to change? It is not so much that new ideas are painful, for they are not. It is that old ideas are seldom entirely false, but have truth, great truth in them. The justification for conservatism is the desire to preserve the truths and standards of the past; its dangers, of which we are seldom aware, is that in preserving those values, we may miss the infinitely greater riches that lie in the future, so it was a run hared by The Butts, a name which was once used by two guys Haydn and Todd Butt who used to set hashes but no longer hash, but was joined by Valdez and aswe live in the present The Butts name was re-branded and included today on this run Ricky Tang, Chris Valdez, Alan Girod and Gerry Soogrim. A lot of butts…..turn right, turn left, up a hill, then thru a bushe trail and then in the garden of paramin, where the ingredients for real good pepper sauce comes. When we reached the top of the hill, we were greeted with the sweet songs of Parang music and a beer stop of course…..No food, but good after run lime.

Poofter….Ricky Tang for not organizing food for the run, however he had left after the run so his stand in was Chris Valdez who wore the Poofter paraphernalia well.

So here we are again…another Hash Saturday and what a day it is! In the midst of a very intense week of rain, flooding etc, we fortunate Hashers somehow managed to get the one perfectly sunny day of the week and God knows we would certainly need it cuz a hash in Paramin is definitely not for the faint of heart, far worse if it had rained!
Having been dumped yet again by my usual Hash ride (I mean really…and this time for a trip to the mall no less!), I was lucky enough that “Ato” just happened to be passing my way and was able to pick me up.
The ride up was pretty uneventful; Ato and I joked around and chatted while a certain “cheerbaby” chatted on the phone almost the whole way up! Certainly seemed to have a lot to get off her generous bosoms J
As was to be expected, there was quite a large turnout due to the proximity to POS…….although I suspect half of the people there really didn’t have a clue what they were in for. Ah mean, I’m no longer a regular on the Hash, but each time I happen to grace de place with meh presence there are usually quite a few new faces – like these people doh learn eh – poor suckers!
The hares tried to give us their usual story – no hills? But unfortunately for them we would not be fooled and then there was some very wise advice from one of the hares……in the event that anyone got lost or separated from the pack, just simply head back up the hill as the only way out was up – huh? Ummm…thanks Ricky but I think we could have figured that one out by ourselves!
And then we were off! Or at least we crawled off, as no one wanted to end up on the wrong trail and with the hares deliberately guiding us in the direction of not one but two seriously steep false trails (but then again who am I kidding, everything here is steep!) At least we were comforted for a while by the fantastic ocean view and the occasional sea breeze.
Eventually we found ourselves on the right trail after an unnecessary trek down Saut D’eau Road – thanks guys! For those of us not familiar with the “sweet hills” of Paramin, there is no easy route, everything here is hard but I must say the hares certainly outdid themselves by finding some pretty challenging courses, after a time you couldn’t even depend on the usual “on trail” Hash banter to get you through the Energy Challenge – oops! I meant Hash as everyone seemed to be conserving their breaths for the hills to come. The hares were also mysteriously absent after we were led uphill (yet again) and into the forest. We trekked a very steep downhill for a while before coming across a checkpoint and shortly after two “Xs” with  no indication of the correct direction.  The pack reunited for a while but figuring we were on a back check we all turned around and started unwillingly back up only to be met by the smiling hare Wahid “you all didn’t check properly man” was all he said before leading the pack back down the hill again  and onto the correct path.
Okay… so by now you get the picture right? Plenty, plenty, plenty hills! Eventually we found ourselves back to the start but it certainly was not easy……..a really, really, good workout especially if you are preparing for the Coast 2 Coast and which I grudgingly enjoyed – masochist that I am.  Hares, my hips and thighs may be thanking you but I most certainly do not!
ON ON!!!

Run No. 758 – 4th September, 2010, Run Site: Paramin

Paramin, the top of Trinidad, a beautiful spot on a sunny afternoon.   Once the run started though, the clouds rolled in and we were running through the misty mountain tops for a while.   With the low clouds, the temperature dropped somewhat but that didn’t stop the pack from enjoying the beer stop which we hit about 15 mins into the run.  Good going hares, especially as the run lasted just over an hour.    With the down downs out of the way early, of note was the 26 virgins, we heard that a few runners were still out, lost.  Eventually they turned up, but lately we seem to be losing hashers on almost every run.   All’s well that ends well, and the lime continued as we enjoyed the balmy breezes at the top of Paramin. On On

Welcome Virgins:Laura, Dave, Karen, Naveen, Jordan, Daisy, Debra, Amanda, Joanna, Michael, Denese, Teran, Timothy, Alan, Elizabeth, Susan, Nicholas, Andy, Gerwin, Michael, Richie, Arianne, Ife, Natalia, Roses, Petal

Poofters:      Kerron, for making his sister Alisa, a virgin, tote a huge shoulder bag with all his stuff, including cell phone. so he could call her during the run in case he needed his inhaler which was also in the bag.  Asst. H.M. Mahasma Arthur Ghandi, for leaving important Hash essentials home, like the Hash Rum and garbage bags.   Marianne & Rene, for making out on the run from start to finish.  And Kerron, again, for sending his ‘udder’ partner on a check way downhill with instructions to text him if he was on the right trail.   For all his transgressions, Kerron was the crowd favourite and was awarded the poofter without further ado.   Meanwhile, Michael Morton Gittens, another virgin, was made to drink from the ‘arm’ for being a total pussy during the downdowns.
