So Run 813!  In the days leading up to the run I watched the skies with trepid concern from the amount of rainfall!  Yes I know it is the rainy season but still fairly new to this outdoor pursuit, I do so love a dry run.  The run is at Santa Cruz in Saddle Grove and the lovely Aerorina was very generous with the use of her house and grounds!  Mountain Goats set the run and Doon, his son and Peter gave us the lowdown on the hash of the day.  Ashe looked un-coordinated in his probably expensive coloured attire, whilst Betty was coordinated in her attire from trainers upwards.  In orange and blue she did stand out a bit, but we are talking about Betty right!!  When we started there was all sorts of ‘ Oh Bacchanal’ as we tried to find the first paper trail.  To be fair it had been simply set, just that we had many turn backs before we found it with the front runners dashing off here and then there.  Me, I just walked in the general crowd and waited for the racing snakes to get it ‘ON ON’. We knew that the trail being set by the Mountain Goats was going to involve a ‘mountain’ at some point especially from where we set off and they did not disappoint, in fact it was virtually straight away.  Nice scenery though (I am talking about the countryside and not the female sort, though there was plenty of that too!)  The stream that we followed was not too steep initially but there were some slippery rocks.  It became even steeper and more slippery as we ascended and, even I ended up on my arse.  I am sure that many were thankful for the numerous vines and saplings that helped us up, and down this mountain.  I did hear a nice young lady next to me suggest that she could swing down on the vines!! There was a tree with he name on it if she had tried.  The river was refreshing and unlike some runs not deep.  Not complaining just an observation!  Then came the road run.

I was somewhere in the middle of the hash running alongside my good lady wife and we managed to stay about there for the whole run.  The one observation by me, and complaints by others especially at the ‘Down Down’ was that there was ‘too much road’  The Iron Lady tried with the sound system at the Down Down but ended up using her own.  ‘New Shoes’ were Kevin, Roxy and one other whose name escapes me.  Ashe was berated for his previous lost key on Run 812 and declared a nominated ‘Poofter’ for the remaining year!  The most entertaining event however was Colin’s skit that neither the photos you may see, nor I can do justice!  Suffice to say it was rib tickling!  The lime was good with some nice fish and chicken provisions.  Richard provided the music on the road at the end courtesy of his Pimp Mobile as we went deeper into Santa Cruz to find a local bar and lime’d some more!  Bring on 814, ON ON!!!

Poofter nominees: Suresh for bringing virgins to the run and forgetting to bring is hash clothes (he had to run in his scrubs). David Richardson a new hasher looks at Haniff and asked, are you a virgin? Then there is Ashe who lost his car keys for the 3rd time for the year at a hash and had hashers looking for his keys for over an hour at the last run, his keys was found where he keeps is precious jewels (in his pants). Poofter awarded to Ashe.

Directions to the next run #815

Run Site: Palo Seco

Drive to the end of Solomon Hochoy Highway and turn right to Gulf City Mall where you will reset your odometer. Drive 8.7 km and turn left at this junction. Continue for 6.0 km to OWTU building at Fyzabad Junction and turn right. After 5 km, make a right turn and then an immediate left. Continue for 3 km and then turn right at T junction. A further 5km brings you to Palo Seco Value Supermarket where you turn left into the road opposite. After 2.4km turn right into James Trace and drive 0.8 km to run site. Look for HHH signs. Please bring your own water for bathing since the occupants of the house at the run site collect rain water for their use. Drive Time from POS :approx 2 hrs.

As if the Gods were conspiring to keep the faithful supporters and a few cabinet members away from the forthnighly meeting with our beloved Ironing Lady, there was an impressive halo around the sun which panicked many to believe that this was surely a sign that the world was about to end. In fact most of us believe that a Mountain Goats run set by Doon and company usually means the end of the world for us hashers since he is known to set some ballbusters on the North Coast, and this was to be no exception. For those of you interested in knowing, a halo is caused by the sun’s rays refracting off ice crystals in the upper atmosphere resulting in a circular rainbow effect around the sun. Yes, we do have ice crystals in hot Trinidad at 22,000 feet and No, it wasn’t because a comet hit the sun releasing gases into space or a precursor for the Mayan end time prediction; or so we hope!

So there we were gathered in the constituency of Blanchisseusse on the banks of the beautiful Yarra River which we have trekked by several times before, to listen to the opening remarks from the Iron Lady who successfully defeated a No Confidence motion several weeks ago. So buoyed by this victory and the prospects of another overseas trip coming up soon, we strutted off like loyal lemmings behind the Iron Lady following Doon, Lisa and a half dozen other virgin hares.

Now that the Minister of Works finally got back the PURE project, it appeared that the first 20 minutes of the proceedings were designed to review the state of the roadway, bridges and drains in the constituency because there was no other reason for us spending so much bloody time on the road! Eventually after about a dozen long mother arse false trails, we ventured into the forest and soon enough after another half dozen long false trails, we started climbing one long bloody hill that seemed to h ave no summit. We just kept climbing and climbing for about half an hour then finally we reached the top. These fricking Mountain Goats lived up to their name. So then it was downhill, literally from here to a smaller river that led to the bigger Yarra River where the hares redeemed themselves somewhat by providing refreshments to the weary and thirsty hashers. Then to the ON-IN which ended by a lovely pool in the river where we waited for the day’s proceedings to be concluded by the Iron Lady.

While the crowd gathered waiting for the last of the runners to return, there was much talk about the happenings in Mayaro and the damage done to an innocent bottle of rum, a casualty of love! There was talk about the cricket match between the Aussies and WI in the Oval and who was going to the Trini Posse lime. More rumours and gossip about who was missing in action and why, etc. So the Iron Lady called the meeting to order, thanked the hares for a "so-so" run, introduced the virgins (there were quite a few) and then gave poofter to the hasher who offended the most. We got to find out who wears the pants and who does the ironing in the official residence of the HM. Finally there was a long diatribe from Harper about how he tried in vain to save an innocent bottle of rum in Mayaro. At the appointed time the meeting was re-adjourned at Uncle Sam’s bar where a few die-hard supporters continued to eat, drink and shit talk while the DJ played some 50s love songs no doubt rightly judging the ages of his audience.

As I was driven into to the run site of Yara Blanchessue by d man who does give iron and iron meh pants, I thought about the stories about our hashes in this area, the first man to run barefoot and the can beers used at that time, then my thoughts were interrupted like when you taking a shower and the water goes, different hashers approached the car, one giving me the best pepper sauce in town , another with a gadget to use for down downs and many other greetings of Long Live the Iron Lady, I felt like the Queen of England.

Were they hearing the whispers of the breeze that was blowing in Yara before the run? We are hashers through and through, we have had some good runs and limes thus far and Mountain Goat Doon with about 9 other hares did not disappoint they had us climbing up and down those hills like real goats and those who couldn’t be a hash goat that day, there was a walkers trail for them to graze. Excellent run, food and after lime. The hash welcomes all….the desperate housewifes, the white men who can’t jump, the 50 year old virgins, the saints and angels we are one big happy family. On On

Another glorious day and hash on the North Coast!

Although the Mountain Goats are known and feared for ‘plenty hills’, the new extended group of hares offered a slightly more gentle run this time, not without its challenges though.  We decided the bees trail would be too much risk and introduced the beer stop instead (always a winner) with Kailey also advertising people’s food being cooked next to the beers – would a hasher ever be fooled into that? After being led into all directions at the start before heading off onto the right trail through forest and up to a view point overlooking the U- shaping stream, the trail descended to cross the water and up the riverbank to get full view of the waterfall. The stunning waterfall proved enough distraction for people to indulge in a dip (not the focused hard core runners though!) and for the off-duty life guard Doon to miss his whistle and buoy. The run then continued upstream and the shallow and clear stream (or so it was before the runners came) and again life guarding duties were called upon by a few ladies – rightly so they say a life guard is never off duty.
 
Nobody got lost, everybody got a chance for a dip after the run, food and drinks were at hand and the down down kicked off with no delay. No new shoes and no Poofter nominations; an executive decision crowned Jordan, a young boy of about 6-7 years,  Poofter for needing to be fished out when he jumped into the pool and couldn’t feel ground under his feet. We hope such a prize so early in a hasher’s career – youngest Poofter ever- works as motivation and encouragement and will not cause any lasting damage and Jordan we hope to see you again soon on a hash. Out of the possible nominations, a few may also have qualified: the Australian girl hashing in flip flops (but actually have you ever seen an Aussie wearing shoes?) and the English couple who paid $ 400 for a guide to take them to see the Avocat waterfall the day before, only to come back the following day for the hash.

Mahashma introduced a new prize just after the birthday wishes for Doon: the Skinniest Indian Competition which was won by Doon’s son, Kern. I know it is not nice to get older and be beaten by your own son at the same time. There were a few virgins, including the English couple mentioned above and Christiane, who was a first time hare and first time hasher at the same time.

Finally to close off a piece of advice – I didn’t benefit from – for the next hash’s scribe quoted from the last run’s trash #775: "Female hashers be warned – don’t ever let Arthur come near you before the start of the hash!!! That is unless you want to scribe.

I got to the run site a little late. Well may be not a little late just plain late. But at times it feels good to be the H.M. because the hash has to wait for your arrival and you get the best parking. Yes, power and office goes to even the Mahashma’s head.
     
The reason I was late was I got stuck behind a certain car on the Old ROAD to Arima. It was a black PCK Cefiro being driven about 3 m.p.h. and trying to avoid any minor hole on the road. I don’t know who the driver was but next time please leave very early for the hash (like the day before!). I was going to make the driver Poofter but he left early.
  
So there I was with no Poofter on hand, so I remedied the situation by taking an executive decision and picking on the young and defenseless. I picked out the young "undertaker" Jordon. He looked helpless enough it was a straight case of child abuse. The young Jordon not knowing his own height wondered into deep water in the river and to be fished out. So I declared him Poofter and he has set the record for the youngest Poofter ever.

Well done Jordon it is the first step in becoming Hash Master some day. And well done Jasmina for a very good write up, beware I will choose you again.

Once again I failed to find the elusive enlightenment that I seek . I suppose it could not have been found around mountain goats (Doon and Peter) anyway. So ON ON to Ravine Sabe .

Virgins take note of the meaning of these signs!!!

1. While on the trail CALL “ON ON” when you see bits of shredded paper/flour! It helps those behind/possibly lost hashers.
2. “O” – check for the correct trail!
3. “X” – you’re on the wrong trail! Go back to the check point and start again.
4. “ON PASS” – to pass someone on the trail.
5. When you are almost in you would see: “ON IN —->” pointing to the correct direction.
6. For those who can’t keep up with the ‘3F’s’ (FIT, FAST AND FURIOUS) pack then just go with the ‘Backpackers’  (SMART) pack who just let them do all the work.
